The introduction of a second tier football competition for Division 4 teams will be up for debate at next month's GAA Congress.

At a meeting of Central Council today, delegates gave the green light to the proposal which, if passed at Congress, will reduce the qualifier series by one round and add three games for second tier teams.

It would also be a case of as you were for the provincial championships in the future.

The eight teams eligible for the second tier competition will be based on Division 4 of the most recent league provided they do not qualify for their respective provincial final.

Re-entry to the All-Ireland series has been mooted as a possible prize for the winners of the competition.
