O'Halloran's New York appointment confirmed

November 05, 2015

Donegal will face New York in two challenge matches ahead of the counties' respective provincial championship campaigns.

New York GAA have confirmed the appointment of Justin O'Halloran as their new football manager.

hoganstand.com had exclusively revealed this morning that the Kill, Co. Cavan native was chosen to replace Kerry man Ian Galvin, who had spent two years at the helm. O'Halloran, 42, served as a New York selector under Donegal native Seamus Sweeney during the 2010 and 2011 seasons and also played for and trained the Exiles.

His first game in charge will be on Saturday week when the Australian International Rules team takes on a New York selection at the Rockland GAA club on their way to Dublin for the Croke Park Test against Ireland. It will mark the beginning of New York's preparations for their 2016 Connacht SFC preliminary round clash with Roscommon at Gaelic Park on May 1.

"It's a great honour to be given this role," said O'Halloran in a statement.

"I've been very fortunate to represent New York as a player and now I'm looking forward to gathering the best players we have available and preparing for the game in May.

"I have huge respect for the Roscommon team, but we will work hard and build a talented panel to take them on. I'm very excited about this opportunity and I just can't wait to get started."

New York chairman Laurence McGrath commented: "We are delighted that Justin took on this role.

"Taking part in the Connacht SFC is a highlight of our year in New York and we always look to make it a truly special occasion. Justin brings great experience and knows how important this is to our county board.

"I want to thank Ian Galvin and his management team for all their work over the last two years. I would also urge our clubs and members to get behind Justin and his management team for what will be a great journey."
