The Midwest Championships in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Only in America. The local hurling team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is called the Pucas, the ladies footballers are the Banshees and the mens football team is the Celtics.

More significantly, all of the teams took part in an historic weekend on August 8/9 when the first ever Midwest GAA Championships were played in the city.

Games were played over two days and Midwest Chairperson John Young was delighted with the success of the event.

'We're the little guys out here and we're trying hard all the time to get approval', says the Down man. 'We've shown that we are capable of putting this sort of thing together'.

'It was a fantastic weekend', said North American County Board Chairman Gareth Fitzsimons (another Down man), who attended the event.

Scott Lentz from the Pittsburgh Pucas hurling team, Maureen Kennedy Macel from the Pittsburgh Banshees, and Dennis O'Donoghue who presented the inaugural Tom O'Donoghue cup, all feature on this report.

Video production by Jerome Quinn for Midwest GAA, with support from the Carrickdale Hotel and the Canal Courth Hotel, as well as sponsors in the USA.
