April 10, 2015

Cavan had a goal to spare over New York in Gaelic Park

Cavan 1-15
New York 0-15

An experimental Cavan team overcame a strong New York outfit to victory in the first game of the Mick Higgins Series in Gaelic Park in the early hours of this morning.

Former Wexford star PJ Banville gave New York a dream start with four points from frees inside 14 minutes. Barry Reilly got true visitors opening score. A brace from Ciaran Brady and one from Enda Reilly narrowed the gap to two loints 0-6 to 0-4 after 25 minutes. New York win extended the lead to four with points from Banville and Brian Connor. Cavan hit back through Jack Brady and Argue but Connor and Andrew Hope sent over to give the hosts a 0-10 to 0-7 interval lead.

Jack Brady narrowed the lead with a pointed free for the Breffni men in the early stages of the second half. Cavan introduced Martin Reilly to the action after 10 minutes and the Killygarry man sent over two quick fire points to narrow the lead to 0-12 to 0-10. With ten minutes left Reilly narrowed the gap to the minimum with the score of the game and another substitute Chris Conroy levelled matters on the half hour. Westmeath's Luke Loughlin looked to have given the Exiles the win with a point heading into the final minutes. But Cavan rallied and were rewarded with a Michael Argue fisted goal. Monagh followed up with a fisted point to seal the win in the visitors favour.
