Hurlers with two yellows could be subbed

Hurlers who receive two yellow cards could soon be substituted rather than sent off.

This is one of the proposals which has been put forward by the Hurling 2020 Review Committee. Rather than comtemplating the idea of introducing a black card in the small ball game, the committee - which is chaired by former Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy - seems to be moving in the opposite direction by advocating increased leniency.

The Hurling 2020 Review Committee proposes that in a situation where a player has picked up a second yellow, he could be replaced by another player provided the switch is within the permitted number of substitutions.

The penalty for a straight red card offence would remain unchanged and would see the player dismissed.

The committee says there is "no appetite" for introducing a third colour of card in hurling.
