The History of the GAA in New York

December 12, 2014

Inclement weather failed to dampen spirits in Manhattan on Tuesday December 9 as the centenary celebrations of the New York Gaelic Athletic Association concluded with a book launch at the Irish Consulate.

The History of the GAA in New York by Fergus Hanna is the result of decades of research and the Down native dedicated the evening to his late friend Joe McInerney who helped him out in the early days.

Hanna will be signing copies of the book at the Riverdale Steakhouse in the Bronx this evening (Thursday December 11).

Newly installed New York GAA Chairperson Laurence McGrath welcomed the new publication, destining the book as a "phenomenal piece of work".

"We all know the years of diligent research Fergus has put into the book," said McGrath. "Gathering all the information through the decades was no easy task and I think you will agree that the finished product is phenomenal piece of work.

"It is a worthy record of the happenings of New York GAA.  Congratulations Fergie, and thank you for your commitment and dedication to getting the book published.  It has been a life?s work for you and we are extremely grateful, and you should be extremely proud."

Consul General Barbara Jones also spoke glowingly about the work of the New York GAA in the Irish community over the last 100 years and wished new chairperson Laurence McGrath luck in his new role and with the proposed redevelopment of Gaelic Park.

Photographs of the launch taken by James Higgins can now be viewed at the New York GAA Facebook page.
