It was supposed to be a stroll in the park for Donegal but they were extremely lucky to come away with a one point win over a gallant Kerry side by a score of 3-14 to 3-13. Kerry once again had to dig themselves out of a hole going in at the half 2-8 to 0-7, the Donegal goals by Sean Boyle and Stephen Griffin. Donegal looked good on the ball picking off scores at will. Colm O'Muircheartaigh opened the scoring for Kerry after 10 minutes and Ian Whelan put Joey Fitzpatrick through for a well taken score for Kerry's second point. However it was Donegal that rocked Kerry for 4 points in a row by Stephen Griffin and Daniel McLaughlin. Kerry responded with 2 frees by Robby Croft and a point by Graham Glynn. By now Kerry were coming to grips with the game holding Donegal to just 1 point for the last 10 minutes of the half while Robby Croft and Owen McGreevy added 2 more points for Kerry to leave the score at the half Donegal -2-8 Kerry 0-7.
Kerry came out for the second half a much different side outscoring Donegal 3-6 to 1-6. Robby Croft and Ryan Murray traded points to start the second half. A great passing movement by Kerry set up Owen McGreevy for a well taken goal and Kerry almost scored a second goal a minute later. The Donegal forwards were under pressure now and they shot 3 wides in as many minutes and there were some great point blank saves by Lee Stacey. It was Kerry now who were dictating the game with points by Aaron Fitzgerald, Graham Glynn (2) and Owen McGreevy. Donegal were forced to concede a penalty which was struck into the corner of the net by Robby Croft and the sides were level at 2-12 each with 8 minutes remaining in the game. Croft struck for a second a goal a minute later to put Kerry ahead for the first time in the game but Donegal fought right back with a debatable goal which the ref had to consult with his linesmen on. 3 goals in 3 minutes was indeed unbelievable action. Kerry would go one up once again on a point by Robby Croft only for Donegal to tie it up at the other end. Kerry had a golden chance to win the game in the end with a close in free but Robby Croft sent it wide, a free he would normally knock over with his eyes closed. A last minute free at the other end at the stroke of full time saw Donegal go through to the semi final and left Kerry to ponder what could have been a fantastic year for the green and gold with every player giving it their very best.
Best players for Kerry were Robby Croft, Lee Stacey in goals whose kick outs were excellent throughout, Ian Whelan played his heart out as captain, Colm O'Muircheartaigh had a fine game as did Joey Fitzpatrick, Darren Foley, Mike Godley and Joe O'Shea in the backs and Graham Glynn at center forward.
