Boston GAA Season Heating Up

July 03, 2014

Donegal senior footballers dealt Connemara Gaels their first defeat of the season last Sunday at the Irish Cultural Center, in Canton Massachusetts.
With all of the major competitions well underway, the GAA season in Boston is heating up nicely. The men's senior football championship is as tight as it every has been. This season it looks like the ladies senior football competition will also be the most competitive as it has been in recent years, and the senior hurling championship is beginning to shape up.

Last weekend all 8 senior football teams were in action. Wolfe Tones recovered from their defeat the previous week to Shannon Blues with a 10 point victory over Galway. Donegal dealt the Connemara Gaels their first loss of the season, and Shannon Blues extended Christopher's suffering by winning a close one. Aidan McAnespies came out on top in a seven goal affair against Kerry. As it stands, after four games played, there are four teams level on six points and two teams on four points. Galway and Christopher's are yet to record a win, despite playing some very competitive games, and it will take a serious slip in form by more than one of the teams ahead of them to give either side a chance at making the playoffs. There is still no clear favourite for the 2014 title, and with time left for teams to still fill out their rosters, it will be very interesting to see how things shape up in the next week or two.

After a rocky start, Boston Shamrocks held on to defeat reigning champions, Connacht Ladies, on Sunday. Connacht Ladies have blown the competition away the last two years in Boston, and with Tír na nÓg also looking strong the Ladies senior football championship is also very much up for grabs.

Fr. Tom Burke's have got off to their best start in recent years in the senior hurling championship, winning their first 2 games and sitting on top of the table. Wexford are next and looked impressive in their last outing against Galway, while Tipperary and Galway are sitting in joint third place with a point each. Still four games for each team to play to decide who gets the bye into the final, and who will play the semi-final.

Cork are unbeaten in the Junior A football competition, with Donegal, Wolfe Tones, and Armagh-Notre Dame in hot pursuit of the southerners. Junior C Hurling sees the Barley House Wolves from Concord, NH, and Worcester battling it out for top spot. Portland and Hartford are sitting third and fourth. Although there is still a long way to go, all indication thus far are that this final will not be one to miss.

With the junior B football championship, junior A hurling, and ladies junior football competitions also underway there is a lot to be decided over the rest of the summer. The national finals are just about two months away. The Irish Cultural Center and Boston Northeast division are hosting the national finals for the first time since 2008. All across the country clubs are competing to be the ones traveling to Boston to represent their respective divisions on Labor Day weekend. The fields are ready, the logistics are sorted out, and plans are afoot to make this a great weekend for the GAA in Boston and North America.
