Donegal whip Celtics to open NY Junior Championship

May 30, 2014
Donegal 4-12
Celtics 5-6

Donegal NY's Junior team launched their battle for the championship with a high-scoring defeat, by 4-12 to 5-6, of the NY Celtics they narrowly beat by one point in the League semi-final. Thursday's win would have been more resounding but for three second half Celtic goals from questionable penalties. Donegal led at the interval 3-7 to 1-4, with all their points coming from play. Celtics opened the second stanza with a goal and a point. Five Donegal points from play interspersed among the Celtics penalty goals kept Frank "Chief" Molloy's lads in the lead and a last goal from play sealed the win. All Donegal's scores were from play and came off the feet of men with Donegal blood. Two goals each were netted by Brendan Grant and Brian Hegarty, who also opened Donegal's second half scoring with a point. Both are sons of Donegal parents. Gaoth Diobhair born NY veteran Anton O Duibhir put 4 balls over the bar. Donegal import Daniel Shovlin added 6 and Paul Murrin, making his NY debut, kicked one over the black spot.
