New York have reacted to GAA president Liam O'Neill's suggestion that the Exiles might exit the championship.

Speaking on Monday at the launch of the €4.17m redevelopment of Ruislip in London, O'Neill queried New York's long-term participation in the Connacht championship.

"I don't know what the future for New York is yet," he said. "I suppose the whole legality of people living in New York has to be settled first. I know the GAA is growing in North America. I don't know whether you'll see New York competing in the All-Ireland series or a world championship. I am not quite sure where the future is there."

New York GAA chairman Liam Bermingham has questioned the timing of these comments, stating that casting even a small level of doubt on the future participation of New York in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship on the week of the County Board's centenary banquet in Queens was an unfortunate decision.

Even more so, he added, given the hard work being put in by Ian Galvin and his senior panel ahead of this year's game against Mayo.

"I'm certainly disappointed by these comments," he said. "The players have been putting in a lot of effort and we very much appreciate the hard work they have put in. To say the least, the timing is poor."
