McCurtain's progress through tight play-off encounter

Thomas McCurtain's 2-9 (15)

Cu Chulainns 0-13 (13)

VGC Group Intermediate/Junior Football Championship Play-Off

Eoin Scully at Greenford

Cu Chulainns and Thomas McCurtains' memorable seasons progressed to Greenford on Saturday afternoon as the respective intermediate and junior champions faced off in a winner takes all play-off. The honour of representing London in the All-Britain Football Championship was at stake. While logic would suggest the intermediate victors would have the upper hand, history suggests this is not always the case.

Junior championship holders Thomas McCurtain's flew out of the blocks and full-forward Conor Murphy scored a goal after four minutes with a low shot to the corner. Darren McManus responded with a brace of points from play for Cu Chulainns. Midway through the first half, McCurtain's lead by three following points from Murphy and half forward Mark McGirk. Cu Chulainns responded well with points from Brendan Breen, Cianan Byrne and Fiachra McArdle.

McCurtain's raised their second green flag after 25 minutes when Mark McGirk fired low in off the post past goalkeeper Sean Moloney. Cu Chulainns proved why they are intermediate champions and again responded well with points from Ger Byrne and Brendan Breen to leave McCurtain's leading 2-4 to 0-09 at half-time.

McCurtain's started the second half with a brace of long-range scores from McGirk. Brian McVeigh took an excellent score for Cu Chulainns and midway through the second half McCurtain's were three ahead. Cu Chulainns then lost substitute Kyle Fehily to a black card and were struggling to contain McGirk who added two further points. Cu Chulainns fought hard until the end with a McCardle free and a point from Byrne leaving two in it at the final whistle.

McCurtain's now enter the All-Britain Championship while Cu Chulainns still have the chance of completing the championship/ league double when they face off against senior side Parnells in the Division Two league decider on Saturday.

Cityjet Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final

Eoin Scully at Mc Govern Park Ruislip

Kilburn Gaels Progressed to the final of the city jet senior hurling championship with a ruthless victory against south-east London based Cu Chulainns. Kilburn started strongly and early points from Fergal Collins and Stephen Lambert had them four ahead. Cu Chulainns responded well with an excellent point from Fionn Byrne and a well taken goal from Karl Rogers while Michael Murphy in goals made a host of good saves. This was as good as it got for Cu Chulainns as Kilburn kicked on through a Kieran Reid goal and a flurry of scores from Donie Reale and Stephen Lambert. The first half ended Kilburn 2.14 Cu Chulainns 1.05.

Kilburn certainly didn't rest on their laurels on the restart and rattled the Cu Chulainns net on 5 occasions in the second half including a penalty from Lambert and one from substitute Kieran Lambert. They simply had for too much power and pace for Cu Chulainns. Kilburn now progress to the final against Robert Emmett's in what should be a cracking encounter. For Cu Chulainns they have achieved their aim of maintaining senior status and are now the only club in London with senior teams in both codes following their footballers intermediate victory last weekend. They will need to recruit well in the off season to have any hope of challenging the likes of Kilburn next season.
