Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

August 21, 2017

Our footballers had a great win over St Clarets in the championship on Saturday afternoon. It was last chance saloon for both teams after losing their opening games and it made for a tight and scrappy affair. 1-02 for Mark Gilsenan in the opening 15 minutes set McCurtains up nicely against the wind. Clarets fought back and went ahead by a point with a goal near the end of the half. The Macs responded brilliantly and piled on the pressure. Gavin Gallagher got the crucial last touch as he punched in a shot from Gerry Flynn to the back of the net from point blank range to leave the half time score 2-02 to 1-03.

St Clarets came out in the second half all guns blazing and scored the first 2 points to pull back level. With the wind now behind their back McCurtains started to hit their stride. Some good defensive work managed to keep Clarets at bay while the forwards started to draw frees from the Clarets backs which Niall Coffey duly struck over to keep McCurtains in front. The killer blow came when Kevin Delahunty (on a mazey run up the pitch) shot from 30 yards and found the back of the net a couple of minutes from time leaving St Clarets with too much to do.
