Four Masters Gaelic Club Coventry news

July 27, 2015

The Coventry-based team have made it into the final ten contests to win a £1,000 prize.

A Coventry Gaelic football club needs your help to win vital cash in the Mars Milk Play Fund 2015.

The Four Masters Gaelic football club, who are based in the Holbrook's area of Coventry, are urging everyone in the City to get behind them by voting online to get their juvenile section, the £1,000 award.

Club Chairman Dave Greene,  advised

"We are just absolutely amazed that we got through to the final ten, as we have beat about 500 projects, which was just unexpected. We never thought we would get this far, because we are such a small club, but its going to need a big final push to stand any chance of winning - We're definitely the underdogs in the competition."

The club was founded in February 1955 by a group of men from Donegal, Ireland and originally consisted of Irish men who were working in Coventry. However todays team is made up predominatly of home-grown talent, and has celebrated a huge ammount of success in recent years.

Since then, the team has not looked back and is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this year..

The Four Masters club is one of only few remaining Gaelic clubs of its kind in the midlands, and it provides opportunities for people from all backgrounds interested in Gaelic football the chance to try their hand at the sport, as well as poviding a familiar environment for Irish people working and studying in the city.

In recent months the club has put an emphasis on developing its underage structure, and currently provides volunteer coaches in 3 primary schools in the city.

"Since sky sports has started to show live Gaelic football we have seen a significant increase in interest in the sport and It's not just people with Irish backgrounds either, we currently have players from a variety of backgrounds playing for us" Dave advised.

"Any money generated from the campaign would be a massive help, and contribute towards kit and goalposts for the recently established under 8's and 10's teams"

"If the club is successful in winning the grant from Mars it would enable them to go out into the community and get Gaelic football into schools to give children the chance to try the sport."

Dave says the team are always on the look-out for new players or volunteers to join in, and invites anyone interested to contact them via email at [email protected]
