HS football team of the week

June 23, 2014

The hoganstand.com football team of the week.
It was a busy weekend on the gaelic football front with plenty of top quality entertainment, here's our team of the week ...

1. Paul Durcan (Donegal)

Durcan's kick-out strategy worked at treat in Clones and provided the platform for Donegal's runaway second-half performance.

2. Padraig McMahon (Laois)

The long-serving O'Moore County defender put in another industrious shift as Tomas O Flatharta's charges just about survived Fermanagh's late comeback.

3. Ciaran McDonald (Tipperary)

The Tipp defender curbed the influence of Cork danger man Brian Hurley who was called ashore in the 52nd minute.

4. Paul Murphy (Kerry)

One of three championship debutants in the Kerry team, the corner-back performed a man-marking job on dual star Podge Collins and roamed forward to net a goal.

5. Colin O'Riordan (Tipperary)

While most other Leaving Cert students were out on the town celebrating the end of the exams, 18-year-old O'Riordan was busy putting his shoulder to wheel as Tipp came close to an upset of epic proportions.

6. Sean McVeigh (Antrim)

McVeigh was assigned the task of shadowing Donegal captain Michael Murphy and the pair enjoyed a ding-dong tussle.

7. Tommy McElroy (Fermanagh)

Pete McGrath's side were unlucky to come away from Portlaoise without the qualifier win and McElroy was one of their star performers.

8. Tom Flynn (Galway)

The tall Galway midfielder laid the foundations for his side's five-point win over Sligo with an all-action performance.

9. Shane McGrath (Clare)

McGrath was on target with 1-2 and, together with midfield partner Gary Brennan, made life extremely difficult for the Kingdom around the middle third of the field.

10. Odhran MacNiallais (Donegal)

Donegal supporters will be hoping that the newcomer - who kicked four points - can replicate the form he showed against Antrim yesterday in the Anglo Celt Cup decider.

11. Francis McGee (Longford)

Michael Quinn, Paul Barden, Brian Kavanagh and McGee all caught the eye in the midlanders' surprise qualifier victory over Derry on Saturday.

12. Aidan Walsh (Cork)

With Cork staring a shock defeat against Tipperary in the face, Brian Cuthbert sent for the calvary and dual star Walsh broke Premier hearts when delivering three late points.

13. Seanie Furlong (Wicklow)

Niall McNamee sent over 10 points for Offaly but Furlong's two goals were decisive in Aughrim.

14. Sean Quigley (Fermanagh)

Hard to argue against a total of 2-8 and the Fermanagh man gets the nod ahead of his Laois counterpart Donie Kingston who raised five white flags from play.

15. Ian Ryan (Limerick)

Not for the first time, Ryan pointed the way for Limerick's footballers with a tally of 0-8 against London in the Gaelic Grounds.
