Joe McMahon believes Tyrone's U21 stars can springboard them towards another golden era.

Last year saw the Red Hands claim U21 All-Ireland glory with victory over Tipperary and McMahon feels that the current crop filtering through have the ability and confidence to kick on and achieve bigger things.

"The confidence is there, the ability is there skill wise and the application is there," the two-time All-Ireland winning defender told the Irish Examiner.

"The way the game has evolved generally over the years, the athlete is being developed more and maybe that is taking precedence over the skill levels of players but certainly with a lot of these boys in Tyrone, the skill level is there and it is continually being worked on.

"They certainly have the potential to go on over the next number of years to maybe win another All-Ireland. The confidence from winning before will definitely help that process along."

As for his return to the playing field, the Omagh man is projecting to be back by mid-spring, by which stage Mickey Harte's men will be gearing up for the Ulster SFC.

"I'd like to come back in around April time and go at it again when the ground is a wee bit flatter," said McMahon.
