Battle for O'Neill Cup hots up

September 24, 2015

Ardboe's Shea and Frank McGuigan put pressure on Dromore's Kevin Donnelly during the Tyrone SFC Final.

Barring draws, the pairing for this year's Tyrone SFC final should be known this weekend.

Tomorrow night (8.30pm) at Healy Park, Dromore and Killyclogher meet in the first semi-final, which is a repeat of last year's Division 1 league final. Killyclogher were victorious on this occasion, but many expect Dromore to exact revenge after they dethroned Omagh St. Enda's with a six-point victory in the quarter-final.

Plunkett Park in Pomeroy hosts the second last four tie between Coalisland and Trillick on Sunday evening at 4.45pm. Plunkett Kane captained Coalisland to their last O'Neill Cup success in 2010 and is chomping at the bit to get back into the final.

"2010 was our breakthrough year, but obviously after that, things have gone downhill. But in county championship, especially in Tyrone, any one of five, six, seven teams can win it ever year," he told the Tyrone Courier.

"That's why it's so competitive. If you look at other counties, it's one-sided. It has taken us a while, we haven't got to a semi-final since 2010, but back now in 2015 we're in it.

"That's where we wanted to be at the start of the year, that's where we are now, and hopefully now that will give us confidence."
