It's fair to say that Colin O'Riordan has had a rough few days.

Forced to embark on a four-day road trip after a punctured lung he sustained while playing for the Sydney Swans NEAFL team against the NT Thunder in Darwin meant he couldn't fly back to the Harbour City with the rest of his team-mates, O'Riordan's misery was compounded by Tipperary's defeat to Mayo in yesterday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final. He would have been a key figure for the Premier County if he hadn't decided to sign an international rookie contract with the Swans last October.

The Templemore native was stopped from boarding the flight due to the serious nature of his injury.

Sydney Swans General Manager of Football Tom Harley said on Friday: "He's as tough as old boots Colin, but it's a pretty significant injury.

"To make matters worse, and I'm sure Colin sees the silver lining in this, he can't fly out of Darwin so we're looking at an exit strategy for him. Options range from staying up there to getting in a car and driving back for four days, so either way he's going to have a hell of a story!"
