Advantage rule needs time - Barrett

Willie Barrett says we won't see hurling's new advantage rule in full flow until the championship gets up and running.

Dublin manager Ger Cunningham was disappointed by how the rule didn't seem to favour his team, who were denied frees that they would almost certainly have pointed as they lost to Cork in the second installment of Sunday's national league semi-final double-header at Nowlan Park, but the national referees appointments committee chairman is calling for patience:

"As the summer progresses we will see situations where fellas will learn where the advantage is so it will come around to their way of ensuring that they will get the free when advantage is called," he says in The Irish Independent.

"We were bound to have teething problems starting off but I was certainly happy with the way the advantage rule was applied. There were four or five great advantages applied in the first game that may have gone unnoticed."
