"Referees are not above learning the game"

Tipperary football selector Tommy Twomey believes managers should not be barred from discussing referees' performances.

Premier County boss Peter Creedon serves a one-match sideline ban for this weekend's crucial Division Three trip to Enniskillen over his criticism of Meath official David Coldrick in the wake of Tipp's controversial opening-round defeat to Armagh and Twomey feels that referees should not be made immune to honest assessment:

"There's a definite strict rule there that you can't make any comments at all about a referee's performance and that's why Peter is serving his suspension next Sunday," he observes in The Irish Examiner

"It's going to be tricky over the next few months, I'd say, with managers getting questioned after games and not really being able to give an honest opinion.

"The referees are not above learning the game and learning different issues that managers could help them with as well. There should be structures there to help the referees do the job and I think managers would come on board with that."
