Munster PPS preview: three Dean Ryan quarters on Wednesday

October 07, 2014

Thurles CBS before their win over Ardscoil Ris in the last round

The Munster GAA Post Primary Schools Dean Ryan Cup Under 16½ A Hurling Quarter-Finals take place this week with three attractive games down for decision on Wednesday.

In Boher, Rice College Ennis will take on Our Lady's Templemore. Both schools racked up big scores in their opening round games with the Templemore side arguably the more impressive with their 2-19 to 1-8 victory over Colaiste Iosaief Kilmallock. Rice College Ennis on the other hand played a high scoring game with Blackwater CS, eventually winning by 4-16 to 4-9. A close and perhaps high scoring game is in store with Patsy Coffey as referee.

The winners will play either Thurles CBS or St. Colmans Fermoy in the semi-final. The Thurles v Colmans Quarter-Final is fixed for Cahir and is another eagerly awaited encounter. Thurles CBS caused an upset in the first round with a hard earned 3-15 to 1-15 victory over last year's Dean Ryan Cup finalists Ard Scoil Ris in a highly entertaining first round game played at Nenagh. St. Colmans on the other hand had a bye in the first round and while they will be lacking match practice as a group, a number of their players helped Colmans to an impressive win over the 2014 finalists Scoil Na Trionoide Naofa Doon in the first round of the Harty Cup last week. Noel Cosgrove will take charge of this game with St. Colmans going in as favourites having reached the semi-final of the equivalent Under 15 competition last year.

In the second half of the draw, Charleville were too strong for High School Clonmel in the first round and last year's Under 15 A Hurling champions have received a bye to the semi-final following the withdrawal of Rochestown from the competition. Charleville will await with interest the outcome of the remaining Quarter-Final as defending Dean Ryan Cup champions Midleton CBS take on St. Flannans in Charleville. Midleton recorded a good win over Nenagh CBS in the first round, winning by 2-23 to 3-13. Meanwhile, St. Flannans were made to fight all the way before getting the better of De La Salle Waterford in their first round game, winning out by 0-18 to 1-9. St. Flannan's lost out to Charleville in last years Under 15 A Hurling Final and perhaps will be slight favourites to progress but won't have it all their own way against a Midleton side looking to win back to back titles in this grade. Richard Moloney is entrusted with the whistle for this game.

Throw-in times for all three games is at 1:30pm and supporters who are available tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) are reminded that there is FREE admission for all patrons wishing to attend one of the three Dean Ryan Cup Quarter-Finals. What are you waiting for?
