There was disappointment for our senior men's footballers on the opening weekend of the Belfry Senior Football championship as a spirited display against the holders Tourlestrane came up just short at Markieviz Park last Saturday evening on a final scoreline of 0-13 to 1-7. Fergal O'Flaherty's side pushed their opponents all the way and were firmly in contention right to the final whistle with midfielder Cian Lally having a fine match and contributing 1-2. The result means we now have a must-win Group 3 match against Coolaney/Mullinabreena at the same venuethis Saturday evening (19th) at 7pm. The team would appreciate big club support for this game. Last Saturday's team was: Ronan McCormack, Ciaran McLoughlin, Jude McGarry, Aaron McCormack, Dara Long, Neil Ewing 0-1 (Capt), Philip Gallagher, Brian Óg Murphy, Cian Lally 1-2, Seán Power, Paul Logan 0-3, John Harvey, Donal Gallagher 0-1, Kevin Davey, Niall Canning. After just missing out on the Division 4 title last weekend, our junior men's footballers will begin their championship campaign this Sunday with a home match against Castleconnor at 1pm. We are in a four-team group in the 'B' championship this year along with Castleconnor, Coolera/Strandhill and Coolaney/Mullinabreena.

 

Three of our ladies intermediate footballers, Sinéad Regan, Michelle McNamara and Rachel Monaghan are part of the Sligo team who play Roscommon in this Sunday's TG4 All-Ireland football quarter-final in Carrick-on-Shannon at 1:30pm. We wish the team every success. 

 

Our ladies minor footballers won their concluding group match in the 'A' championship last Sunday morning with a fine 2-16 to 1-7 victory over last year's champions St Nathy's. This was a repeat of the 2016 county final and the win means we finish the group stages with three wins out of four. We now await the results from the other final round group games which will determine whether the team qualifies directly for the final, or will face a play-off.

 

Our boys U16 footballers play St Mary's in the championship this Monday evening at 7pm in Oxfield. The U14 team travel to Bunninadden on Friday evening to play Ballymote/Bunninadden in the championship. Throw-in: 7pm. Our thanks to the club's senior captain Neil Ewing who kindly took our girls U14 footballers for a coaching session last Tuesday evening. The players found it to be a very worthwhile session.

 

Our girls U12 footballers produced a great display last Friday evening in Oxfield to qualify or the semi-finals of the U12 'A' championship thanks to a comprehensive win over Coolera/Strandhill. They now face league winners Tourlestrane in the county semi-final on August 26th.

 

Our boys U12 Division 1 team are through to the Shield final after beating Coolera/Strandhill by 0-20 to 0-12 last Tuesday. The Division 3 side put up a tremendous display in their cup semi-final against St Molaise Gaels before eventually losing out by three points. We were very fortunate to have Tyrone senior football coach Peter Donnelly take the U12 footballers for a coaching session last Saturday in Oxfield. The players thoroughly enjoyed this innovative session and we are very grateful to Peter for taking time out of his busy All-Ireland schedule with Tyrone.

 

Our U14 Féile hurlers enjoyed a memorable day trip to Croke Park last Sunday to watch the All-Ireland senior hurling semi-final between Cork and Waterford. Good luck to the Benbulben Gaels U12 hurlers against Tourlestrane at Markievicz Park this Tuesday evening in their Shield 1 semi-final at 7:45pm.

 

The minor hurlers continue their championship campaign with a trip to Kilcoyne Park on Thursday evening to play Tubbercurry/Cloonacool at 7pm.

 

Good luck to Ronan Keane and the Sligo masters gaelic football team who play Westmeath in their next championship match on Friday evening.

 

The club extends sympathy to club member and county treasurer Peter Greene on the death of his mother Kathleen Greene last week.
