It was a happy Halloween for our senior men's footballers and our U14 girls who both enjoyed big successes at the weekend.
The men retained their senior championship status for 2016 following a 1-10 to 1-9 victory over our near neighbours St Molaise Gaels at Scarden in the replayed Championship relegation final on Saturday night. There was little to choose between the teams throughout and the contest could have swung either way. The match had just about everything including three red cards. But the character of this DRP team shone through again. Our congratulations to manager Stephen Ward, his backroom team, and the players on a successful conclusion to what proved to be a long and eventful campaign (eight matches). Commiserations to St Molaise Gaels. We wish their goalkeeper John Gilsenan, who sustained an injury during the game, a speedy recovery.
The club congratulates St Mary's GAA Club on their recent Belfry SFC success and wishes them well in the Connacht Club Championship semi-final against reigning All-Ireland champions Corofin.
If the men's championship relegation final had drama on Saturday night, it paled in comparison to what our U14 girls footballers served up a few hours earlier in Cloonacool in the County U14 'B' Championship decider against Eoghan Rua. They came from 13 points down at half-time to win by 6-7 to 6-2 in a rip-roaring second-half. Congratulations to the players and management on a fabulous success. Players: Lilly Rose Leydon (C), Megan Byrne, Feye Hennigan, Lisa Morrow, Allanah Gallagher, Sarah Kisby, Ava Harte, Tara Donaghue, Oda Carty, Sophie McDonagh,Aoife Mc Loughlin, Lauryn Delaney, Maeve Casserly, Eve Scanlon, Keela Scanlon, Eva Butler, Carol Ann Monaghan, Leah Mc Carthy, Lorraine Oats, Megan Conway, Kitty Leydon, Carrie Chambers. This the club's third county title for 2015 in underage girls football - and the U16s are still in with a chance of completing the clean sweep when they take on Eastern Harps in the forthcoming county final.
Sligo's new U13 football development squad played their first match against Longford at last Thursday. Four DRP players, Eoghan Smith, Tola Caraway, Lee Cummins and Ian O'Brien, were involved - and Sligo won. Well done to the lads, and to our own Jimmy Smith, who is part of the county U13 management team.
