St. John's GAA Academy U8's and U10's

Another successful Road trip - this time to Shamrock Gaels!

Last Wednesday evening the 17th June, in fantastic playing conditions, our clubs 7's, 8's, 9's and 10's teams travelled to Shamrock Gaels Coola pitch for the second last round of the 2015 Go Games.  The Gaels had the pitches looking magnificently with all pitches marked out and ready on arrival.  The home club provided the referees on the night who conducted all matches with great fairness and consistency. A huge crowd of travelling support arrived from Carraroe and together with the Shamrock Gaels parent's, this created a great social and sporting atmosphere.
7's
St. John's used their magic with Aiden Moore starting in goal for the second game in a row and made some fine saves and very accurate kick outs in the first quarter. St. John's started with Kian Roddy, Ryan Regan, Rion Monaghan, Fionn McMorrow and and Kate Lynch in the backs. Our back line marked really well and made some great passes into the forwards. Lynch's return really knited the defence together with some great tackling and long clearences. All back tackled with great precision and passed the ball out of defence efficiently.  Shamrock Gaels found it difficult to break down the John's backline.  Up front, John's started with Jack Kelly, Kevin Patton, Conor O'Gara, Danny Feeney and Cameron Rooney.  The forwards started slowly but soon found their rythem.  The lads discussed many of their scores which enabled the Gaels to launch many counter attacks!  We had two subs which enabled all players to play 3 full quarters.
Fionn McMorrow went to goals in the second quarter and gave some great accuracy to kick outs and agility on the goal line.  The second quarter saw Keelan Mulligan and Jack Kelly slotting a goal a piece. Both celebrated with their team mates.  Patton fielded the ball well and held onto and gave some great passes. Cameron Rooney and Conor O'Gara linked up well up front.  Danny Feeney again had a fantastic defensive game, stealing the ball from the Gaels men on many occasions.  Rion Monaghan got his hands on some high balls and also scored two fine points with his favourite left boot.
At half time, the St. John's team switched roles and Cameron Rooney began the 3rd in goals, picking out his teammates with all kick outs and commanding the goal line. Kian Roddy and Monaghan linked up very well together and tapped over some fine points and a goal each.  The Gaels began to claw their way back into the game.  John's had to work hard to get the ball up the pitch.  Jack Kelly linked up well with Rooney for the kick-outs and found the forwards with some crisp passes.
Mulligan continued to impress on his finest day in a St. John's Jersey. Kate Lynch was as always a leader on the pitch and showed some fine defending and tackling.   Aiden Moore weaved his way round the Gaels defence and kicked some great points under pressure.  Ryan Regan and Noel White did a great man marking job all day and particularly in this quarter.

In the final Quarter St. John's began to pass more and finished with some fine team scores, with O'Gara going back to the No. 1 position and sending some great long kicks down field.  McMorrow defending really well and continued to do a great man marking job despite a sore ankle.  Roddy finished the game with a great solo run and goal.  The 7's overall had a great game.  With continued practice at home and during training on Saturday's, the team will excel in the last game as we reach the "blitzes" stage of the year.
After the game as is customary at this stage, both teams showed great sportsmanship in lining up and shaking hands with each other.

8's

Another Great display from resilient St John's Under 8 team.  From the throw in St John's faced a tough battle, when Shamrock Gaels fielded a team of 11  versus St John's 9.  Great goalkeeping from James Malone and a strong defensive display from Jack Davey,Ross Hargadon and Rachel McGoldrick kept St John's chances alive with a score of 2-2  in  the first quarter.
The second quarter was a more even contest with Shamrock Gaels reducing their team to 9 a side.  Great tackles from Emma Egan and Mimi Lee kept the second quarter score to 1-3 to the home team.
Great attacks in the third quarter from Adam Feeney scoring two points with Jude O'Connor assisting in the attack.  The versitile Ross Hargadon also scored from a sideline ball which meant the third quarter ended 3-4 to the home team.
A great display in the final quarter from St John's with a score of 6-3.  Great free taking from James Dylan Barnicle resulting in 2 points along with scores from the ever tenacious Rachel McGoldrick , Jack Davey, Adam Feeney and James Malone helped St John's to a well-earned final score of 12-12.
It was an extremely tough match but St John's showed their character and discipline to overcome these odds.

10's

St. John's U10's travelled to play Shamrock Gaels on Wednesday evening 17th June last on a brisk summers evening in Riverstown.
We had 9 confident and happy young kids taking to the field.
Lining out on the evening were Eoin Mulligan,Chloe Clerkin, Brendan Kovencheuk, Dylan Kearns, Emmanuel Nwani, Conor McGowan, Adam Kenny, Corey O Dowd, and Daire Walsh.
We started well in the first quarter with fine scores from Dylan Kearns, Adam Kenny and Eoin Mulligan. We were put under pressure by a strong Shamrock Gaels forward line in the second quarter but came back in the third quarter with well taken scores from Conor McGowan, Corey O Dowd and Daire Walsh.
Again we came under pressure from Shamrock Gaels in the last quarter but strong midfield work from Brendan Kovencheuk and great defensive play from Chloe Clerkin and Emmanuel Nwani ensured we secured a well-earned draw from a game that saw some fine flowing passing and well converted scores along with an odd long ball into the box.
Team coaches Darren O Connor and Enda McGowan were delighted with a great evening of football and brilliant performance by all U10's on show.
