Sligo will become the 33rd and last team to enter the football championship when they meet Roscommon in Saturday's Connacht SFC semi-final at Markievicz Park.

It's almost 11 weeks since the Yeatsmen played their last competitive game against Armagh in the Allianz League.

"It is long, there's no doubt about that," Sligo captain Mark Breheny acknowledged in the Western People.

"Unless we go restructuring the whole championship structure, I'm not sure what the solution is. In saying that, it's a massive gap for us from the Armagh match, close to 11 weeks. It's a huge wait.

"You're trying to fill that time, between challenge matches and keeping yourself on your toes at training, keeping that level of intensity up that we had during the league, from game to game.

"It has been difficult, but we're used to it from last year. Hopefully, we can get a better result in the semi-final this year than last year."

The 34-year-old could be joined in the Sligo team by his nephew, Cian Breheny, who is a son of 2007 Connacht SFC winning manager Tommy.

"I'd say it's a fairly unique combination, an uncle and a nephew playing," he said.

"Hopefully both of us will feature against Roscommon and it'll be a proud day for the family. I never would have played with a brother at county level, so it's nice to have a nephew there."
