Curran & McCann Connacht Champions in Collooney

Collooney handball club hosted the Connacht Men's & Ladies 40 x 20  finals at the weekend.  The provinces top players were at the Sligo venue. It was the first major event to take place in the new 40 x 20 handball court since its opening on August 29th last at a cost of €200,000.

On Saturday's matches Ricki O'Gara from the St. Coman's Club in Roscommon defeated fellow Roscommon man Neil McDermott by 21-9, 21-17. O' Gara was then defeated by Galway's Martin Mulkerrins from the Moycullen Club in Galway 21-9, 21-19 in the semi-final.

In the ladies qualifying section Galway's Ciana Curran had an easy win over Mayo's Leona Ryder in straight games while Amy Corrigan from the Ballaghaderren Club in Mayo was brought to a tie breaker before defeating Clodagh McMenamin 2-12, 16-21, 21-6.

The finals were played today Sunday and resulted in wins for  Mayo's Joe McCann who defeated Martin Mulkerrins 21-20, 21-12 while Ciana Curran outscored Amy Corrigan 21-13 21-12 in the ladies final.

Next month the Collooney Club will host a number of Connacht Championships 40 x 20 finals.

It is expected that World Handball Champion Paul Brady will be coming to Collooney in the 2nd/3rd  week of February. Brady from the Kingscourt club is jetting out to Houston this week to part in the  U.S. Handball Pro Stop Tournament.
