Castleconnor club notes

September 22, 2014

All Ireland Title for Martin: Na Fianna in Dublin was the venue for the All Ireland Handball Championship 60 x 30 finals at the weekend. Martin Cooney defeated Robert Doyle from Wexford 21-10 and 21-19 to win the Silver Masters B Handball title. This is a huge achievement for Martin and we congratulate him and all the Cooney family. Sligo's Paddy Walsh and Shane Bruen were also successful in their respective tournaments. U-14 team storm into County Final: The u14 team hosted St Michaels in the championship semi final on Friday. The team got off to a great start when Ronan Wilson ran the pitch to score a goal. James Tully and Oisin Flynn added points before anther solo run from Ronan ended in a goal. The backs were defending well turning over ball. An excellent kick out from Liam Donegan gave Ronan the chance to run the pitch, and he took full advantage finishing the run with a goal. Michaels came into the game and brought it back level before James scored a goal after the ball came off the crossbar from Oisins shot. More points from Oisin James and Matthew Blakeney before the boys became quiet again allowing Michaels back into the game. Castleconnor led by the minimum at half time, 4-5 to 4-4. The second half started with yet another goal for Ronan Wilson. This was the start of a purple patch for the boys which saw scores for Ronan, James, Oisin and Patrick Cooney. The lads were playing great football from the back out. Daniel Ruane, Eli O'Neill and Fergal Boland were winning the few balls that came in to them, with Colm Naughton and Daire Barrins bringing it out to midfield. Andrew Blakeney was the link man with Patrick Cooney getting the ball on the wing and giving great passes into James Oisin Matthew and Brian Durkan. However Michaels refused to give up and started pulling back scores. Eoin Gillard came on for Patrick Cooney. Castleconnor fell asleep and Michaels took full advantage and pulled the game back to a single point. More drama as a goal mouth scramble was ended by Liam when he dived on the ball on the goal line, winning a free and then clearing the ball up the field. That was the final play as Castleconnor held on to win by a point, 6-9 to 7-5. They are now into the final against Ballymote.
