O'Connor to take on dual role?

Joseph O'Connor could attempt to represent Offaly in both football and hurling next year.

The Faithful County has produced many dual stars down the years, including the great Liam Currams who won All-Ireland hurling and football medals in 1981 and '82 respectively. However, the huge demands of the modern game have effectively spelled the end for the inter-county dual player, with Shane Dooley and Dan Currams among those who have tried and failed to juggle both codes in recent seasons.

But, according to the Tullamore Tribune, O'Connor is wanted by both Offaly football manager Pat Flanagan and his hurling counterpart Eamonn Kelly, and may be tempted to serve both. The youngster has been involved with the footballers in recent seasons and his performances for St. Rynagh's in their run to last month's Offaly SHC final would suggest he has something to offer the hurlers.

If he decides to combine both codes, he will face a dilemma on successive Sundays next March when the Offaly football and hurling teams will both be in Allianz League action. And that's likely to be just the start of it…
