U14 County Final C

U14 hurling second team were pipped at the post in last Saturday's C county final v Kinnity played at O'Connor Park. All who attended the game were left scratching their heads in wonder at how a game we completely dominated could slip from our grasp in the final eight minutes. With 52 minutes on the clock Tullamore led by 2-5 to 1-2 but conceded 2-2 in the final frenzied moments to lose a game they always looked like winning.

Despite squandering a multitude of chances in the first half Tullamore still cruised to a halftime lead of 1-3 to 0-1. The Blues were on top in every position on the field but failed to put their opposition to the sword. Points from Brian Todd, Dylan Boland and 1-1 from Dean Molloy was poor return for all the chances created. Tullamore looked to have taken a firm grip on the game when Dean Molloy scored his second goal early in the third quarter. Whilst we continued to spurn chance after chance, our backline and midfield continued to play to an exceptionally high standard. Seasoned campaigners like Brendan Leavy, Dean Carroll, Eoin O'Connor and captain Conor Lambe repeatedly repelled determined Kinnity attacks. Meanwhile youngsters John Furlong, Daniel Fox and the excellent Adam Kelly produced displays that bodes well for the future. With eight minutes left to play the Blues led by six points.Immediately the ball was moved quickly up the field and landed in the Tullamore danger area. Heroic defending saw John Furlong clear the ball to safety. To the amazement of all and sundry, the referee awarded a free in to Kinnity on the twenty metre line. You now sensed a sudden change in the momentum of the game. The lead was now cot to five points.Directly from the puck out,one of our players was blown up for over carrying when the free clearly should have been awarded in the other direction. A new twist emerged when the resultant free bounced in the Tullamore square and hopped into the net. Tullamore now clung to a precarious two point lead with five minutes left to play. A little bit of panic now spread through the ranks as the drama unfurled. On 57 minutes a hesitant clearance from our backline fell to Kinnity's most dangerous player 35 yards out and dead straight in front of the goals. We all held our breath as a powerful shot was unleashed. Goalie Adam Roche-Kane,  who had been having a tremendous game up to then, moved to his left and diverted the ball onto the post. However, to our horror ,the ball ricocheted into the Tullamore net. Incredibly with 57 minutes gone and having completely dominated the game, Tullamore were now behind for the first time. To their credit the boys in blue battled back ferociously and forced a 21m free directly in front of the Kinnity goals. At this point Tullamore would have settled for the draw but Dean Molloy's effort was completely mis- hit and cleared to safety. With luck and momentum on their side,Kinnity snatched the last point of the game in the final seconds. The smash and grab operation was complete and Tullamore had no time to recover. Despite the cruel nature of this defeat all involved with Tullamore GAA are immensely proud of these young men.  Final Score: Tullamore 2-5,Kinnitty 3-4.

U14 Football Championship

Tullamore Under-14 footballers had a good win against neighbours Shamrocks in the Championship Quarter-Final last Wednesday evening in Durrow.  The outstanding feature of the game was the excellent performance of the Tullamore mid-field and backs in keeping a good Shamrocks attack to 0-3 in the first half and no score in the second half.  The Tullamore forwards fought hard for every ball and this meant that Shamrocks were starved of quality possession for most of the match.  Some good score taking saw Tullamore win 4-14 to 0-3. Every member of the Tullamore panel has put in a great effort to get the team to the semi-final; this will continue in the weeks to come.
