Joe Quaid wants to be the next Offaly hurling manager, but is facing competition from at least three other candidates, including former boss Joe Dooley.

The ex-Limerick goalkeeper has confirmed to the Irish Examiner his interest in the vacancy after stepping down as Limerick camogie manager on Monday. However, it's believed Dooley, who managed the Faithful between 2008 and 2011, along with recently-departed Kerry manager Eamonn Kelly and Kilcormac/Killoughey manager Danny Owens, are also in the frame.

"They are probably as low as they have been in a few years, but I feel there's a good opportunity there to push them in the right direction," said Quaid, who played against Offaly in the 1994 All-Ireland final, which is often referred to as the "five-minute final" after the midlanders snatched victory with a late comeback.

"A proposal has gone into them and it's a wait and see situation now. I can't say much more than that."

Tipperary's 2010 All-Ireland winning manager Liam Sheedy is spearheading the search for Brian Whelahan's successor.
