Owens in Faithful frame

Danny Owens celebrates with Tomas Geraghty after Kilcormac's Leinster Club SHC final win over Oulart at Nowlan park

Danny Owens has thrown his hat in the ring to become the next Offaly hurling manager.

The 1981 and '85 All-Ireland medallist confirmed to the Tullamore Tribune this week his interest in replacing Brian Whelahan, who stepped down last month after two years in charge. Owens has been by far the most successful manager on the local scene in recent years, having guided his native Kilcormac/Killoughey to a three in-a-row of Sean Robbin Cups as well as to an All-Ireland club final appearance in 2013.

Former Limerick goalkeeper Joe Quaid, who is currently Treaty County camogie manager, is also believed to be in the frame.

The five-man selection committee, which is chaired by ex-Tipperary All-Ireland winning manager Liam Sheedy, hopes to be in a position to make a recommendation at next month's county board meeting.
