U14 Hurling
Tullamore U14 First Team Hurlers had a great win over Birr in Round 4 played in St.Brendan's Park on Monday last June 29th. Playing with a strong breeze into the town end,The Blues were quick off the mark with a goal in the first minute from Luke Egan.It was largely tit for tat from then until midway through the half as both sides exchanged points.Already short the services of Michael Feeney and Michael Fox,Tullamore then lost Padraig Martin to injury. It wasn't looking great for The Blues at this point but the switching of Ciarán Egan to Full Forward from Midfield in a direct swap with Luke Egan was to have a huge bearing on proceedings. The introduction of Anthony Lambe for the injured Padraig Martin was another major factor in The Blues taking a tighter grip on this game. With Lambe and The Pocket Rocket CormacEgan mopping up possession around Midfield, the Tullamore Forwards were guaranteed a plentiful supply of ball.In the run up to half time Ciarán Egan brushed aside the highly rated Birr Full Back to bury two goals. He was also dragged to the ground and forced a penalty. However Luke Egan's drive was well saved by the Birr Goalkeeper. Two lovely points from Jay Sheerin and CormacEgan gave The Blues a 3-7 to 0-4 halftime lead. The question was would the lead be enough against such a strong breeze. We needn't have worried considering the class and power in the Tullamore Backline. Some clever halftime switches saw Ciarán Egan and Luke Egan partner up in the middle of the park.Cormac Egan was now drifting off his half forward position into a more defensive position just in front of his half back line. These moves helped keep scoring opportunities to a minimum as The Blues settled into the wind. The half back line of Kalvin Fenlon,Kevin Mann and Cian Martin were coping effortlessly with the Birr attack while Sean Courtney was giving a thoroughly majestic display at Full Back. However, two goalmouth scrambles midway through the half saw the boys in green and red reduce the arrears to a mere five points with plenty of time on the clock.Game On.Would Tullamore wilt under pressure?? Would they roll over in the face of the late surge from their illustrious opponents??? Not these Boys in Blue. For the remainder of the game,Tullamore calmly eased through the gears and upped the tempo to quell the Birr revival.Sean Courtney,Kevin Mann and John Mahon drove Tullamore forward from the back. The three Egans-Ciarán,Luke and Cormac made the midfield their own,Corey White,Matthew Keegan and Anthony Wham Bam Lambe fought like tigers for every ball up front. With The Blues seven points up heading into the final moments Cormac Kelly stepped up to provide the coup de grâce.First he buried a first time groundshot to the roof of the Birr net after Matthew Keegan's initial effort had been blocked. Then in a super move involving beautiful hand passing and clever movement, young Kelly plucked a cross field delivery out of the air and rifled over a fantastic point from 21 metres out.The final score of 4-13 to 2-8 gives Tullamore 3 wins out of 4 and guarantees a place in the Quarter Finals with one game to spare.Scorers:CiaránEgan 2-4....LukeEgan 1-5.....CormacKelly1-1.....CormacEgan 0-1.........Jay Sheerin0-1....CoreyWhite 0-1

Tullamore Second Team U14 Hurlers completed a great week for the club with a super win over highly rated Ballskenach on Saturday morninglast.Playing up the infamous Ballyskenach hill and facing the wind in the first half,Tullamore powered their way to a 2-3 to 0-8 half time lead. The first half was notable for some magnificent defending from DiarmuidEgan,JohnFurlong and the classy Daniel Fox.Adam Roche-Kane was having a very solid game in goals and the midfield pairing of John Ward and Dean Carroll ensured that the hosts earned every ball they got.Indeed it was JohnWard and Dean Carroll with their strong running which caused most problems for the men in black.Up front a hard working forward line created the openings for Dylan Boland and Alex Berry to secure the vital scores. The second half saw Tullamore up their game to new levels.Ballyskenach re-shuffled their team in an attempt at getting a foothold on Midfield and the Tullamore half back line. However,The Blues dealt with the new threats and we witnessed some very strong defending from the improving Conor Lambe and EoinO'Connor.Gaps were opening up for the Tullamore forwards as Ballyskenach threw caution to the wind in chasing the game.Alex Berry continued as he left off the first half by wreaking havoc at full forward. His two goals on 43 and 52 minutes sealed the deal.Super points from John Ward and Ciarán Digan (2) finally silenced the very vocal home crowd as time ran out.The final score 4-7 to 0-12 sees Tullamore unbeaten after three rounds. We play Kinnitty in the final group match in a couple of weeks.Short a number of players on Saturday last,Tullamore gave a wonderful display. These boys are improving beyond recognition and many are in line for a call up to the first team. Most importantly however is the fact that Tullamore is able to field two quality competitive teams in this year's U14 Hurling Championships.Scorers: Alex Berry 3-4...Dylan Boland 1-0....Ciarán Digan 0-2.....John Ward 0-1.
