U14 Hurlers
Our U14 Hurlers collected their second brace of points with a hard fought victory over Na Fianna at O'Brien Park on Friday last May 22nd. Playing way below par Tullamore had to call on all their reserves of skill and cleverness to finally overcome a very stubborn opponent.Na Fianna made all the running in an extremely physical first half and led 1-1 to 0-1 at the break.Tullamore looked out of sorts and introduced the prodigiously talented Luke Egan and Jay Sheeran at the break. Both were to have a huge effect in changing the game in Tullamore's favour. However, when The Blues fell six points behind after eight minutes of the second period it looked like the boys in black and red would march on to victory. It was then that Luke Egan pounced on a dropping ball, turned his marker and headed for goal. With defenders bearing down on him,the green helmeted Shefflin look-a-like buried the ball in the roof of the net.Game on.The gap was now down to three. To their credit,NaFianna responded with two points of their own.Again it all looked bleak for The Town. With one final throw of the dice,Tullamore now introduced pocket dynamo Cormac Egan. And what an inspired substitution this proved to be.The little man proved a real thorn in the side of the baffled NaFianna players as he fought tigerishly for and secured possession of every breaking ball in the final quarter.A pointed free from "Cool Hand Luke" and a beautiful point from Ciarán Egan reduced the deficit to a single goal with eight minutes remaining on the clock.Tullamore now piled on the pressure with the magnificent Sean Courtney driving them forward from the back.A goalmouth scramble saw Luke Egan apply the final touch for a Tullamore goal as the game entered the final five minutes. The final killer blows were inflicted by Corey White. In the game's most telling moments The Chalkman collected a ball way out on the wing under the stand. In one motion Corey slipped his marker, gathered the sliotar and headed for goals. With the crowd screaming for the Tullamore attacker to take his point,Corey continued to bear down on goals. The chance seemed lost as he was forced out wide just as he reached the danger area. However, in an instant The Chalkman unleashed a pile driver into the far top corner of the net.The large home following erupted as Tullamore took the lead for the first time in the game.White had the final say when flicking a Padraig Martin free over the bar after Cormac Egan had been fouled yet again out around midfield.Na Fianna piled on the pressure in the final moments but The Blues rearguard held firm. When the final whistle sounded NaFianna player slumped to their knees in disbelief at the Tullamore fightback. They say that it's the sign of a good team when you can win after playing poorly. And that's what Tullamore did in this game. The final score of 3-4 to 1-6 doesn't flatter the home side but they will know that they'll have to improve to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
