The best of luck to the Offaly Senior footballers who play Longford in the Division 4 Allianz football league final on Saturday evening at 5.15pm in Croke Park.  On the team and panel from the club are Kenneth Garry, Eoin Rigney, James McPadden, Niall Darby, Brian Darby, Conor McNamee, Anton Sullivan, Paul McPadden and Niall McNamee.

Junior B Championship Rhode v Clonbullogue in Clonbullogue on Friday at 7.15pm.

 

There was no winner of the Rhode GAA Lotto for the week ending 13th of April for a Jackpot of €15,000.  The numbers drawn were 22 26 27 29.  The club would like to thank all those who supported the draw and thanks to Killeen's for the use of their premises and for their help and cooperation.  The following matched three numbers and received €100 each.  The lotto this week is in O'Toole's.

The Rhode GAA Lotto is the main source of income the club has and now you can play online though our website.  The good news is when you play the lotto online you are entitled to free draws, for example pay for seven draws receive the eighth one free, pay for fourteen draws receive two free and so on.  In other words, the more you play the more free draws you are entitled to!!

 

Get well wishes is extended to all the people of the parish who are ill or hospitalised at the moment especially to former senior player and former chairman of the club Liam Swaine.

 

Sympathy is extended to the O'Toole family of Rhode on the death on Tuesday morning last of Brendan after a long illness.  The late Brendan was an out and out gentleman.  A great husband to the late Imelda R.I.P and father to Enda, Paul and Deirdre and he was a great provider for them.  The late Brendan worked with Bord Na Mona and the E.S.B in Derrygreenagh and the power station in Rhode.  He was greatly admired and respected by his fellow workmates and he was a tremendous tradesman.  He was also a man of great witt and was truly a great character.  He was a passionate and loyal GAA man both to Offaly and to the Rhode GAA Club where he served in several roles.  As a player he excelled up through the underage teams up to the senior team where for over ten years he was the first name on the team sheet at midfield.  He won three senior championship medals in 66, 67 and 69 he lost the 64 final to Clara.  In the four finals he had a different partner, in the 1964 defeat to Clara his partner was Ger Ennis, in 1966 he was partnered by Patsy Murphy, in 1967 by his long life friend and work colleague Christy Dunne and in 1969 by J.J Grehan.  He was also a very good seven a side player particularly in the era.  He also travelled to London when the Rhode team for the first time ever played outside the Country in 1964.  When his playing days were over he got totally involved in the club being an excellent treasurer of the club and one of the best ever secretary's.  He was involved in all fundraising events and was a major member in the monthly draw at that time and later a member of the lotto committee.  The whole community has lost a true and loyal parishioner who was the perfect gentleman but he will be greatly missed by his family Paul, Enda and Deirdre in particular.  As a mark of respected the members of the club and his old playing colleagues formed a guard of honour at his funeral where the no. 8 jersey draped his coffin while at Fr. Dowling Park the Rhode flew at half mist.  We have all a great and loyal friend.  Brendan was laid to rest in his native Rhode on Thursday.  May he Rest In Peace.

 

Sympathy is also extended to the Swords family of Ballybryan on the sudden death of Fr. Tommy Swords in South Africa on Tuesday of last week after a short illness.  Fr. Tommy who was due to celebrate his golden jubilee this July was a missionary priest who has spent the last fifty years in South Africa, where along with his spiritual duties he served the people of his huge parish and he lead them in all aspects of their lives.  Fr. Tommy came home every two years and he really enjoyed those trips when he met up with family and friends.  He also loved the Gealic Games and in particular all the Offaly hurling and football teams and especially all Rhode teams from Under 8 to Senior and he attended all their matches wherever the game might be.  He would also attend all social and fundraising functions which would take place while he was home.  He was one of the vice-presidents of the club which he was very proud of.  He was fond of a game of golf when home and he was also a huge follower of Shane Lowery.  He also had a keen interest in Ballybryan School both academically and in their sporting aspects and he would always visit the school when he was home to say mass.  We as a community and the surrounding community as a whole have lost a true and loyal friend.  He will be sadly missed by all but especially by his family his brother Christy and twin sister Maura Allen (Clonbullogue) in particular his fellow members in South Africa.  Fr Tom will be laid to rest in his parish in South Africa this Friday.  May he Rest In Peace.
