Under 16 footballers
Our U16 footballers signed off on their league campaign with a handsome victory over Ferbane/Belmont at O'Brien Park last Monday night. The Blues who had suffered defeats to Na Fianna, Ballycumber/Tubber and Edenderry in recent weeks, came out on top on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-4. Tullamore set the pace from early on, with Aaron Malone popping over a free off his left foot after being fouled himself. This was added to with points by the industrious Michael Feely and Tom Furlong. Ferbane got off the mark but Tullamore settled with a well taken goal from Michael Feely after a Shane Martin free dropped around the square. Far from having things their own way the Blues defended well, with goalkeeper Sean Robilliard making a couple of fine saves. His fullback line of Robbie Hand, Brian Finn and Mikey Lynam were tigerish in the tackle and made life difficult for the Ferbane forwards. They were ably assisted by a fine half-back line of Pa Fahey, Dylan Hensey and Kevin Kelleher, who combined to thwart many attacks and then set up rapid counters with some fine passing moves. Indeed Ferbane could only manage a further point before the break while Tullamore kicked some fine scores through, Feely (twice) Martin and midfielder Myles Moloney who tore through the middle to score leaving Tullamore 1-7 to 0-2 up at half-time.
The second half produced a fine display from both sides as Ferbane upped the ante and for long periods laid siege to the Tullamore goal resulting in 3 fine points, however every time they scored Tullamore managed to find a reply of their own with Jason Hogan getting in on the act with Martin, Feely picking up where they had left off. The quality on offer by both teams was very good and both sides can praise their respective keepers for some fine saves. Tullamore in defence were tackling well while also prepared to throw their bodies in the way to prevent scores, however Ferbane finally got through for the goal that their hard work deserved. But the young Blues would not lie down and before the finish raisedanother green flag as Feely finished after a well struck shot by Moloney, now operating at full-forward was superbly saved by the excellent Ferbane keeper. All players could be proud of the way the battled and played some fine football too, proving that when they get stuck in, they are more than capable of competing with any team in the county. Notable performances apart from those mentioned above include James Dwyer, Jamie O'Reilly and sub Alex Guilfoyle, but there was no doubting the man of the match performance of Michael Feely, despite suffering a bad hand injury in the first half. Let's hope these lads knuckle down in training and keep improving and believing in themselves as championship is due to begin on April 20th.
