Offaly manager Brian Whelehan believes that his charges will answer their critics this year.

A section of their own fans are not happy with the performances of the Offaly senior hurling team in recent times, but Whelehan feels that last weekend's win over Laois was a step in the right direction.

The Faithful County produced a very good display to defeat a Laois side that had beaten in the corresponding fixture the previous year.

And Whelehan told the Midland Tribune that every player on the squad wanted to be there and was good enough to be there.

"Everybody has been knocking this Offaly team and maybe the management as well, but the workrate that has gone in this year has been fantastic," Whelehan.

"We've lads out there that want to hurl with Offaly. We've always said to them that we believe there are good hurlers in our squad, and I think we answered a lot of critics last weekend."
