INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL REPLAY
After a long 33 year wait since 1981 Raheen GAA Club are at long last the 2014 Intermediate Football Champions having finally re-captured the title that has eluded them for so long when at the second time of asking they came out on top against Shamrocks in the Final Replay last Saturday afternoon in O'Connor Pk, Tullamore on a scoreline of 3-07 to 0-10. Raheen were first on the scoreboard as Danny McEvoy fired over the opening point inside the first 30secs. Then Shamrocks got going as they opened their account with their first 3 points by the 10th min and they were taking control of the game. Then out of nothing in the 13th min came the turning point of the game when Raheen captain Padraig Bracken's speculative shot from over 40m out dipped in through the hands of the keeper to the top right corner of the net for the opening goal. Midway through the half Raheen were dealt a blow when wing forward John Crombie was black carded for dragging down his man but they added the next point again from full foward Danny McEvoy. Then in the last 5 mins of the half Shamrocks sent over another hatrick of points to give themselves the lead by just the minimum at the break 0-06 to 1-02. Shamrocks doubled their lead with the first point of the second half but then in the 5th min Raheen's Richie Reynolds who was about to be substituted threw a spanner in the plans on the sideline as he caught a high ball on the edge of the square sent in from midfield by Liam Boland and brillantly blasted the ball to the net for Raheen's second goal and the lead which they would not surrender thereafter. Raheen were in flying form now and they took full advantage 4 points in a row over the next 10 mins from Dylan Hyland, Richie Reynolds (2) and Padraig Bracken. The following 10 mins Shamrocks came back to keep themselves in touch adding 3 points but a point from Raheen's Declan Byrne kept the lead out to 3 points. Like last week Shamrocks were in need of a last min goal to save themselves and in the last min they went in search of it when a sidlien ball near the end line was sent in high to the square but Raheen keeper James Boland had his eye on it all the way as he stuck out his fist to punch it clear where Ben Ridgeway picked it up and soloed it downfield then passed it to Declan Byrne who in turn passed it to Richie Reynolds on the edge of the square and he volleyed it first time past the keeper and into the net for goal no 3 and the title clincher.Nearly 4 agonising minutes of stoppage time followed before Ref Fergal Smyth blew the full time whistle to spark wild scenes of celebration among all the Raheen players, management and huge amount of supporters as Captain Padraig Bracken and Vice Captain Paddy Rigney were presented with the Bill Kelly Cup by Offaly Chairman Padraig Boland. Raheen will now move forward as Offaly representatives for the first time ever in the Leinster Club Championship where they will take on the Laois / Meath winners in the Quarter Final away in 2 weeks time.
