Pat Flanagan's appointment as manager of his native Offaly's senior footballers has been delayed to allow him assemble his backroom team.

The Irish Daily Star reports that the Faithful County board met last night and were told that discussions took place with a name "that was very much in the public domain" on Monday night.

Flanagan is also expected to take on the Under-21 job with a different management team.

Brian Whelahan, meanwhile, has expressed a desire to stay on as hurling manager and put forward a plan seeking significant changes.

County officers are to cost the plan before ratifying the Birr legend.
