JUNIOR 'A' HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Ballyskneagh/Killavilla 4-10 Edenderry 4-25

The DERMOT HALL Sponsored Hurling team rolled back the years with a vintage performance in Ballyskneagh on Friday last. The Reds racked up a huge score and hurled fantastically well despite having to travel 50 miles to the venue for 7pm on a Friday evening. The 100 mile round trip was somewhat cushioned by the 4-25 on the scoreboard.

Outside of a small lapse in concentration for a short spell late in the second half the Reds were always in control of this game. The errors made during this period helped to flatter the Ballyskneagh performance but will give the lads plenty to work on ahead of the final group game V Gracefield. With one game left to play in the group, Edenderry has secured a Q/F spot. A win over Gracefield will secure 3rd place in the group and a Q/F against 2nd place in Group 2.

The performance on Friday was at a high level from 1-15 and all subs used. Good to see Derek Egan back in goals following last years injury and his progress has been steady to date and with two games under his belt now hopes are high he will continue between the sticks. Fresh from his leaving cert results Jack Gormley pitched in with a few scores as did Sean Og Farrell and Cathal Nolan at midfield. All of the forwards got on the score sheet with Shane Kelly, David 'Rodge' Hanlon & Cillian Farrell combining well in the full forward line to contribute 4-13 to the Edenderry scoreline.

There is still plenty of hurling left in this team and hopefully a long season ahead. Next up will be Gracefield at home (game postponed due to weather a number of weeks ago). We'd encourage Edenderry supporters to get down and see this game.

TEAM: D. Egan, J. Geraghty, C. Carey, J. Coffey, J. Gormley, J. Merrick, P. Manley, C. Nolan, S. Óg Farrell, G. Hanlon, E. Kelly, P. Hanlon, S. Kelly, D. Hanlon, C. Farrell.

SUBS: T. Monahan for P. Hanlon (inj), D. Ryan for J. Geraghty & J. Kelly.

MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Na Fianna 3-19 Edenderry 5-13

The EDEN CLAIMS Sponsored Minor Football Team earned themselves a hard earned draw in Geashill on Tuesday last. The Reds, with a very young Minor team battled till the end and could have sneaked the win just at the death. A late penalty from Ciaran Farrell brought them back into it and levelled matters with only minutes left, however a pointed effort by the Reds was quickly cancelled out by Na Fianna and this absorbing encounter ended in a draw.

The high scoring nature of the game proves that Minors want to play football and the fact that the majority of players in Offaly were deprived of game time for the six months of the year owing to the run of the Offaly minors does nothing to improve the overall standard of the game in Offaly. Players want to play games and encounters like the one last Tuesday should be played all year round to improve players.

Edenderry now play St. Broughan's and can secure a semi final spot with a win in this game.

OFFALY HURLING - OPEN FORUM
A major effort to restore Offaly hurling to its place among the top hurling counties will kick off with an Offaly Hurling Open Forum on the Wednesday after the All-Ireland hurling final.

A Leinster Council initiative, headed by former Offaly Manager, Diarmuid Healy has been established to put a process in place to re-establish Offaly as a top hurling county.

An Offaly Hurling Committee has been put to assist in the process.  The committee is chaired by Kieran Keenaghan(St Rynagh's) and includes Pat Cleary(Ballinamere); Joe Errity(Birr), Cillian Farrell(Edenderry), Martin Hanamy(St Rynagh's); Liam Hogan(Ballyboden St Enda's and formerly Coolderry); Finian McDermott(Tullamore); Damien Martin(St Rynagh's) and Pat O'Connor(Coolderry).

The role of the committee is to identify issues, identify solutions to those issues, draft plans to deal with the issues and identify people to implement those plans.

The committee has already identified coaching and team preparation at club and county level as two major issues.  Plans are already being drafted to organise courses in coaching and team preparation by top coaches from outside the county.

High-powered intensive courses are also being planned for all county mentors to commence in October.

An Offaly Hurling Open Forum will be held in the County Arms Hotel, Birr on Wednesday September 10 at 8pm.  This Forum will consist of a presentation by Diarmuid Healy on Stage 1 of Offaly Recovery - Implementing Skill Coaching in Team Preparation which will focus on defining hurling, coaching and team preparation.  This will be followed by questions and answers and a sharing of ideas of how to restore Offaly to its rightful place among the top hurling counties.

The Forum is open to all.  Club officials, team mentors, players and club members are particularly encouraged to attend.

EDENDERRY HURLERS MEET THE STARS
On Saturday 16th August last, in St. Conleth's Park in Newbridge hosted a Centra community hurling event with two of the country's brightest hurling stars, Henry Shefflin and Pádraic Maher, were on hand to give expert tips to the young aspiring hurlers! Mangans Centra Edenderry was one of the participating stores and a number of Edenderry players got the opportunity to attend, including Cormac Farrell, Rurai Carroll, Cillian Foran and Conor Walsh. It was a fantastic day and capped off brilliantly when the lads got their photograph taken with Henry Shefflin.

U12 WIN IN KILCORMAC & TRIP TO CROKE PARK
Edenderry U12's travelled to Kilcormac last Wednesday and put in a very spirited performance against Kilcormac/Killoughey to get the away win. This group of players has worked hard all summer and are benefiting from the fruits of their labour now. They have a number of games left this season and Adrian Forde, Keith McGuinness, Nevin Farrell and Adrian Farrell will continue to work on their development as many prepare for the step up to U14 level.

As a reward for this excellent work this Summer the Club has secured tickets to the Donegal V Dublin All Ireland Semi-Final in Croke Park on the 31st of August next. This promises to be a great day out for the lads as they will get an opportunity to sample the atmosphere at a full house in Croke Park on match day. The boys will be travelling by bus and accompanied by members of the management team. This is something to look forward to and a full report will be published on the trip following the event.

BUSY WEEK FOR U10 FOOTBALL
Despite it being the holiday season the U10 footballers made the long trip to Ferbane on Monday night to take part in an excellent Blitz. Teams from Ferbane, DER Gaels, Shannonbridge and St. Rynagh's made up the participating teams and it was a great opportunity for the Edenderry lads to test their skills against West Offaly opposition. Each team played 3 games and the Reds battled hard all evening and did themselves proud at the West Offaly venue.

The games were excellent preparation for this coming Saturday when the young Reds head for Celbridge to take part in an All Ireland 32 County Blitz. This will give the lads an opportunity to play against teams from all over Ireland. With many players returning from holidays, Edenderry will sent 3 teams to the event and it promises to be a great day. To add to their already hectic schedule the players will train on Tuesday night ahead of the event. We wish the team and management the very best safe in the knowledge that they will represent the Red jersey with pride.
