SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Edenderry 3-18 1-4 St Brigid's.

The JV BYRNE Sponsored senior footballers moved into top spot in Group 1 of the Offaly senior football championship with a terrific twenty point victory over St Brigid's of Croghan on Thursday night.

The reds made two changes from the side that beat Tullamore in the league final two weeks ago with Adam Mahon and Keith McGuinness replacing Gary Blong and Sean Doyle respectively. McGuinness, a thirteen year veteran of senior football, made the most of his first start this year after returning from a lengthy injury problem and after just four minutes played he had registered 1-1.

Edenderry dominated the opening half and held a 1-9 0-2 half time lead and and hopes of St Brigid's comeback in the second half were quickly dismissed when goals from Aaron McDonnell and Sean Moriarty inside the opening five minutes of the restart moved Edenderry into a 3-10 0-2 lead.

Seven points from midfield from Richie Dalton(3) and Derek Kelly(4) helped Edenderry on their way and the Edenderry supporters were even treated to the rare sight of a Sean Pender point with forty six minutes gone in the game.

Team: Brian Quinlan, Sean Pender(0-1), Stephen Guing, Colm Byrne, Adam Mahon(0-1), Sean Marshall, Stuart Cullen(0-1), Richie Dalton(0-3), Derek Kelly(0-4), Oran Lawton(0-1), David Hanlon, Basil Malone(0-1), Keith McGuinness(1-3), Aaron McDonnell(1-0), Sean Moriarty(1-3).

Subs: Ciaran Farrell for Oran Lawton, Mark Young for Basil Malone, Daniel Nolan for Sean Marshall, Gary Blong for Stuart Cullen, Diarmaid Meleady for Adam Mahon.

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS EXIT CHAMPIONSHIP

After a battling display in Ballinagar on Sunday evening last the JV BYRNE Sponsored Junior Footballers exited the Championship following a winner takes all encounter with Ballinagar.

The opening exchanges were tough and 3 men saw the line before the break. Edenderry played all the football but two goals for Ballinagar before the break kept the scores even. A big start to the 2nd half with two more goals gave Ballinagar the platform to go on and win the game.

Edenderry battled to the end and clawed their way back but eventually fell by 5 pts with the extra man being a big factor.

This group worked hard all year and will be disappointed with an exit at this stage.
