Rory Hanniffy has urged the Offaly county board to hand his Birr club-mate Brian Whelahan another term as hurling manager.

Whelahan made it clear after Saturday's championship exit at the hands of Tipperary that he wants to stay on, and veteran Hanniffy - who refused to be drawn on his own inter-county future - is strongly in favour of 'Sid' being reappointed.

"He found himself in this position sooner than he ever expected, but that's how things worked out. It doesn't need to be said, the admiration I have for him as a former team-mate and now as a manager," Hanniffy is quoted in the Irish Examiner.

"I'm proud to have hurled with him and for him. I'm sure he has learned so much - it's not a job I imagine is easy, I can only imagine that next year he'll have a completely different perspective on it and this year will really stand to him."
