SHC: Rynagh's shock champions

July 30, 2010
St Rynagh's 3-17
Tullamore 3-9

St Rynagh's upset the odds Sunday evening at O'Connor Park, where they handed Tullamore an eight-point defeat in the county senior hurling championship.

In a free-flowing game, it was St Rynagh's that made the better start as Paul Quirke and Declan Tanner pointed two early scores, but Tullamore wiped that out with a James Keane goal.

Scores went back and forth after that until Shane Dooley struck for his first major to help send Tullamore in at the break 2-4 to 0-9 to the good.

Tullamore looked set to steam-roll their opponents after the restart as they hit an unanswered 1-2, with Dooley raising his second green flag from a 21-yard free, but the Saints fought back gallantly.

Ger Scales and Gary Conneely both pointed and on 46 minutes they were thrown a lifeline when Tanner blasted in a free from midfield which whisked past everyone and flew to the back of the net.

When Tanner and Paul Quirke added points the sides were level with 12 minutes to go and in that time Sean Kenny hit two goals to steer Rynagh's to victory.
