Monaghan Obituaries 2001

he Late Joey Gartlan
The 23rd June, 2001 saw Joey Gartlan of Rockdaniel Road and formerly of Cuchullain Terrace go to his eternal reward after a short illness bravely borne. Joey Gartlan, a name synonymous with the Carrickmacross Emmets GAA Club was associated with the club as far back as the early 1930s when he began his playing career along side his brother Mickey. He played both Junior and Senior grades during his playing career. Joey was involved after his playing days with the fostering and development of underage team snapshots after a victorious county final. Once his playing days were over, he became a very active committee member. He was deeply involved in the establishment of Emmet Park and his trade as a plasterer came in handy when the walls around Emmet Park and the outer road wall had to erected in those days on a voluntary basis. He lived to see his dream of a proper club house and stand completed at Emmet Park.
His passion for greyhounds in his early years did not go unnoticed when he used the length of the Park to test his runners before trying them on the track. There are some who would state a bit of coursing went on at Emmet Park, unofficially of course, in those days with the odd shilling changing hands during the event. His crowning glory came when he saw his dog “Sweet Singer” win the Sweepstake at Navan in 1962. Joey was also into fishing and was a member of the local Angling Club.
Joey held the position of Assistant Treasurer for a number of years with the Emmets Club and he was made an Honourary President in 1971 for his work and commitment to the club - a post he held until his death. Joey’s sons Sean, Tony, Gerry and Fintan were all involved as players with the Carrick Emmets club. Fintan showed his prowess as a hurler with The Carrick Emmets Hurling Club as well. His daughter Orla did not let the boys have things all their own way, showing her football skills with the Carrick Ladies and also wearing the County jersey to represent the Monaghan ladies. Some of his grand children have also worn the Emmets jersey with distinction at both football and hurling grades and his grandson Wayne is a member of the current U12 hurling team. Joey was a regular attendant at our games both home and away and his unmistakable voice could be heard from the stands offering his opinion on the efforts of players and the referee alike. Joey’s commitment and dedication to the Emmett Club was unquestionable. To his wife Lily, his sons, Sean, Australia, Tony, Gerry and Fintan Carrickmacross , daughters, Mairead, Anne, Mary and Orla Carrickmacross, Roisin, USA, Eilish, London and Sinead, Ardee, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, his sisters Alice, Magheross and Madge, Birmingham and his brothers Francie, Magheross, Tommie, Dundalk and Jackie, Cardiff, the Executive of the Carrickmacross Emmett GAA Club extends its deepest sympathy.
