FIXTURES.
As the calendar moves towards the August Bank Holiday weekend and into what has been a traditional break in club competitions in Monaghan there is a very limited programme of activity for the coming week with the under 21 divisions 1 and 2 finals, tomorrow evening, Friday, and 2 minor football championship division 2 quarter-final replays on Tuesday evening next August 2nd.
U21.
In the under 21 division 1 final Donaghmoyne who defeated Carrickmacross by a goal last Friday evening will take on Magheracloone who had already booked their place in the decider. This is the same pairing that contested the division 1 final last year when Magheracloone won by 3-12 to 0-9 but Donaghmoyne will be better positioned this year as they will have a number of players coming through from their successful minor team of last year and it promises to be a much closer encounter this time around. That game takes place in Killanny tomorrow evening, Friday, July 29th with a throw-in time of 7:30 PM.
In the division 2 final Truagh, who had a comprehensive victory over Aughnamullen, running in 10 goals in the process, will be fancied to take the division 2 title but they will not find it easy particularly if it's a local derby, as at the time of going to press they are waiting to see if they will be playing Emyvale or Latton. Truagh will look to county under 21 players like Niall Rooney, Adam Treanor and Thomas O'Brien to underpin their drive for the silverware. Throw-in for this one is in St. Mary's Park, Scotstown at 7:30 PM tomorrow evening Friday, July 29th.
MFC.
There are 2 quarter-final replays in the minor football championship division 2, down for decision on Tuesday evening next August 2nd with Na Mullai Sarsfields, the Killeevan and Eire Og amalgamation, taking on Inniskeen in Smithboro, while Carrickmacross have home advantage against next door neighbours Killanny. Both games throw in at 7:15 PM and extra time will apply if necessary.
HURLING.
Last Thursday evening saw the 2 semi finals of the 2016 Silver Hill Farm sponsored senior hurling championship, with Inniskeen and Monaghan Harps HC meeting in the final for the 1st time ever, following their victories over Carrickmacross and Clontibret respectively. Inniskeen had a very comfortable victory over Carrickmacross but it was a much closer affair with Monaghan Harps HC holding out for the narrowest of victories over a resurgent Clontibret. The final of the senior hurling championship is scheduled for Sunday, August 7th and that will be the first time since 1999 that Castleblayney HC will not be appearing in the decider. The 2 teams who lost out in the preliminary rounds, Castleblayney HC and Truagh, and in last Thursday's semi finals, Carrickmacross HC and Truagh, will now play off in the Shield competition with the 2 semi finals listed for this evening Thursday, July 28th. Truagh take on Castleblayney HC in St. Mellon's and Carrickmacross HC travel to Clontibret, with both games getting under way at 7:30 PM. The Shield final is scheduled as the curtain raiser to the senior final on Sunday, August 7th at a venue yet to be confirmed. Monaghan had two clubs in action in the Tain Ulster club hurling league last weekend with Castleblayney HC defeating Aodh Ruadh of Ballyshannon by a point, but Carrickmacross were on the wrong end of a 15 points margin against Mattock rangers of Louth.
