It was with great sadness that people in Emyvale and Monaghan learned of the death of Sean Hendry in London. Local historian Seamus Mc Cluskey, would rate Sean as one of the greatest players ever to wear the Emyvale jersey. He was a colourful character who enjoyed the craic. He played at mid-field for the county team for six years claiming the number nine jersey as his own. He was part of the Emyvale team that won the Minor Championship in 1950 & was the mainstay of the team that won the Dr. Ward Cup in 1955. He was a great kicker of the placed ball and with his height, over six feet tall, he dominated & controlled many games from midfield. Unfortunately, like so many others, he emigrated to England and Emyvale's loss was London's gain as he continued his football career over there & helped them win three All Ireland Junior Titles. In 1965 he was awarded the title of "Best Gaelic Footballer in Britain".
