Largy College clinch victory

December 12, 2014

MONAGHAN POST PRIMARY SCHOOLS U16 FINAL.

Largy College (Clones) 2-11, Ballybay Community College 1-8.

Largy College Clones staged a great final quarter recovery to clinch victory in this hugely entertaining and at times highly exciting under 16 final in Smithboro yesterday. Conditions on the day were extremely difficult, bitterly cold with a biting wind and intermittent driving rain, that did pose problems for both sets of players, but to their credit they rose above those conditions to produce some excellent passages of play although the conditions did lead to mistakes on both sides. Largy College had the better of the exchanges in the first half and created the bulk of the chances but failed to convert a number of clear-cut opportunities with the result that just one point separated them at the break, Largy College 1-3, Ballybay 0-5, the Largy College goal the opening score of the game after two minutes by Paul Monaghan. Within a minute of the resumption Largy College extended their lead to 2 points but six minutes later they found themselves three in arrears as Ballybay Community College struck for 1-2 in the space of four minutes, Shane Forde with 1-1 and Conor McCabe with the other point. An exchange of points still left the Ballybay school three in front after 10 minutes but that was as good as it was to get for the mid Monaghan side as Clones staged a strong final quarter to hit 1-6 without reply, the goal from a penalty by man of the match Tyler O'Hanlon nine minutes from time helping to clinch a deserved victory. One disappointing note though for them was that they finished the game with 14 players following the dismissal of Matthew Newell on a second yellow card in stoppage time.
