Rockcorry GAA club notes

July 22, 2014
Hard Luck
Firstly, I would like to extend our commiserations to the Monaghan players and management who were defeated after a brave battle against Donegal last Sunday in the Ulster Final. In fairness, it will not be remembered as a classic encounter but nonetheless it was certainly a gripping match that kept everyone on the edge of their seats but sadly it was not meant to be! On a positive note, we are still in the All Ireland Championship campaign and our focus now turns to the back-door qualifiers where Monaghan have been pitted against Kildare. The game is scheduled for Saturday 2nd August and will take place on the hallowed turf at Croke Park at 7pm. This will be another great opportunity to wear the famous Monaghan white & blue jersey so get behind the team once again and show your support for the Monaghan team.
Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League
Following the Ulster Final defeat against Donegal last Sunday, Monaghan will play in round 4B of the All Ireland qualifiers on Saturday 2nd August. The Monaghan team management has consequently requested that this weekend's SFL & IFL matches be postponed and this request was approved by the CCC.
Rock Grand Prix
On your mark, get ready, get set and go, go, GO…To date our upcoming Grand Prix has received a great reaction from the general public and is certainly picking up speed as we approach the big event which will now take place on Bank Holiday Monday 4th August. The race will involve ride-on lawnmowers and it's expected that the racers will be divided into various heats or categories based on performance, time trails and amount of money raised. The racers will be competing not for prize money, but simply the prestige and honour of holding the coveted title of the first ever Ride-on Lawnmower Champion! With so much at stake, it's no surprise that a number of the competitors are already seizing each other up and are ready to do battle! On that point, somebody told me recently that Colin "Lightning" Quinn has plastered the words "Ka-Chow" on the back of his speed machine and was heard taunting and calling his fellow competitors "Thunder", which I didn't quite understand at the time until someone highlighted that - thunder always comes after 'Lightning'! (I think he watches too many Disney films!) It's going to be a wonderful opportunity for the people of the village and surrounding areas see something new and exciting and definitely very strange! So please come along and have a blast cheering on friends and family and why not hang around afterwards and feast on a lovely sizzling barbeque while the kids enjoy a disco and other activities.
Golf Classic 2014
Our upcoming golf classic takes place on Saturday 23rd August so please spread the word to all your golfing buddies. This year's event will once again be held at the prestigious Clones Golf Course and we are delighted to have Mullinahinch Private Nursing Home on board as our Main Sponsor. The cost to enter a team is €120.00 and to book your place please contact our chairman Jimmy McGeough 087-9457279 or Ollie McQuillan 087-2100800 and a member of the organising committee will be in contact with you to discuss a convenient time for you to play. There are also exciting opportunities for businesses, families and individuals to advertise by sponsoring a tee or a green for a reasonable €50. This will be another great opportunity for you to showcase your golfing talents so make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd August and we look forward to seeing you at the first Tee. If you are unable to play golf but would still like to make a contribution perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring a prize for a raffle. If so please get in touch because we would be delighted to talk to you.
Golden Jubilee Celebration Night
On behalf of the Rockcorry GAA club I want to offer my heartiest congratulations and extend my best wishes to Fr. Jerry White who celebrated his Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) of his ordination to the priesthood. A special Thanksgiving Mass was held at St. Mary's Corravacan, yesterday evening Friday 18th July, and afterwards a special presentation night was held in St. Mary's Hall where Fr. Jerry reflected and shared memories of his spiritual vocation with family, friends and fellow parishioners from surrounding parishes. This was a very special and historic day for Fr. Jerry White and we were delighted to be part of it. Since arriving in the Parish his vision and leadership has certainly challenged people within the community to actively participate in the works of the Parish. His kindness as a priest is obvious and he is always upbeat, welcoming and pleasant and we are truly blessed to have someone of his calibre and spiritual guide to shepherd us during our journey.Having served on a number of committees it would be unfair to name individuals (to avoid leaving someone out) so I will just say a massive well done to the management committee and everyone who helped organise the event. Having said all that, I think, the group of ladies deserve a special well done for putting on an absolutely wonderful selection of tasty sandwiches, delicious treats including decorative cakes, yummy buns, mouth-watering deserts and more cups of tea than Mr's. Doyle could ever imagine! Well done ladies it was a lovely and enjoyable feast and I'm quite certain nobody left feeling hungry! Finally, congratulations Fr. Jerry and as you move onward may the Lord continually bless you and guide you as you bring the love of God to those in you path.
Monaghan GAA Kelloggs Cul Camps
I want to congratulate one of our budding stars of the future Calum Calvert who was recently selected as the junior player of the week at the recent Kellogg's Cúl Camps held in Ballybay. This has certainly created a lot of talk among family members regarding what side of the family he gets his football ability from and, obviously, I need to remain neutral and not take sides but if someone asked me I would have to say the Mothers!!! Well done Calum, a great achievement for you and hopefully we will see you grace the green & white jersey for many, many years to come.
Guess the Score Competition
Surprise, surprise nobody had the correct score, either exact goals & points or correct total points scored. We are looking at giving a prize for the nearest score but our juvenile committee are still number crunching and when they let me know I shall let you know.
On behalf of the club I want to thank all the players and their families who returned the guess the score cards and a massive well done to the eighteen families who filled their score sheets and will be entered into a lucky dip draw for a prize.
Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 12 Summer League
Our under 12 footballers picked up their first points of the league campaign last Saturday 19th July with a 1-4 to 1-17 victory against Eire Og. While the scoreboard shows a thirteen point winning margin it was a hard fought encounter as a gutsy and determined Eire Og side made us fight all the way. We started the stronger and played the better football during the opening exchanges and took some lovely scores along the way from Ryan Carroll 1-2, James O'Brien 0-1 and Aaron Smyth 0-1 to lead by 0-3 to 1-4 at the half time interval. The second half was really exciting and we continued to produce some stylish football and tagged on five points (Adam Elliott 0-1, Aaron Smyth 0-2, Gerry Larmer 0-2) without reply to open up a nine point advantage. Eire Og rallied and really put it up to us and their persistence paid off midway through the half when they scored 1-1 to reduce the arrears. However, we finished the strongest and with another period of dominance that yielded eight more points ( Ryan Carroll 0-2, Gerry Larmer 0-3, Aaron Smyth 0-2, Christopher Donnelly 0-1) to claim the league spoils on a final scoreline Eire Og 1-4 Rockcorry 1-17. It was a great performance all round and well done to all the boys and girls. Keep up the good work at training and their next game is on Tuesday 29th July when they host Donaghmoyne at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm.
Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 14 League
The next game for the under 14 footballers is this Saturday 26th July when they travel to play Toome at 12 noon.
Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 16 League
Sadly, Cremartin were unable to field a team last Thursday evening so the match was cancelled and the points were subsequently awarded to us. The under 16 team will play their last game in the league campaign on Thursday 31st July when they play host to neighbours Latton and throw-in time is 7.30pm.
Under 8's & 10's Double Go Games Blitz
Our under 8 and under 10 footballers travelled to Aughnamullen last Friday 18th July to take part in a Go Games Blitz campaign. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I only had time for a quick stop but once again it was another very successful and enjoyable blitz campaign and all the children from various clubs across the county appeared to have lots of fun. It is always great to see a good turnout of kids perform at this level and enjoy themselves in a fun environment and that's what's it's all about. Well done to all the boys and girls who took part in the blitz, they showed plenty of enthusiasm and displayed loads of energy and the signs are very positive for a bright future. It was also wonderful to see so many parents there to support and encourage the children and a special word of mention to the hard working coaches & mentors of all the clubs who freely give up their time voluntarily to help organise and look after the future stars of the club. Its people like this that makes the Gaelic Athletic Association so great and we appreciate all the work you do. Well done everyone and we look forward to the next outing which is a under 10 blitz and is scheduled for Saturday 26th July at Oram between 10am to 12 noon.
