Monaghan SFC: Carrick shock Clontibret to reach decider

September 29, 2008
Carrickmacross 1-13 Clontibret 1-11 Carrickmacross staged a late smash and grab act in Aughnamullen last Saturday and dumped champions Clontibret out of the Monaghan SFC at the semi-final stage. A goal from Sean Downey three minutes from time proved the O'Neill's undoing as they conceded two points in the added on minutes which saw them exit the county championship in dramatic fashion. Carrickmacross stunned the favorites with a strong opening 20-minutes display that saw them move into a five-point lead 0-8 to 0-3, but that was soon cut away with some classy scores from Clontibret's forward players. It was a disputed Rodney Gorman penalty though which proved the main difference at half-time , as the holders took in a 1-7 to 0-8 lead at the interval. A brace of scores from Andrew Callan backed up by a white flag from county senior Stephen Gollogly brought the game back to level pegging, after Conor McManus had pushed the leaders into a three-point lead shortly after the restart. Clontibret looked as though they were about to take victory when Martin Corey and Michael Hughes (2) re-established a three-point lead, but Downey's major on 57 minutes was backed up by young substitute Ronan McMahon and Andrew Callan from a long range free as the outsiders pulled off a famous victory on their way to the final, where they meet either Castleblayney or Latton.
