Tyrone top All-Star nominations list
September 25, 2008
Not surprisingly, Tyrone top the All-Star football nominations list with 10 of their All-Ireland winning side short-listed for the prestigious awards.
Defenders Conor Gormley, Justin McMahon, Davy Harte, Philip Jordan and Ryan McMenamin, midfielder Enda McGinley and forwards Brian Dooher, Colm McCullagh, Tommy McGuigan and Sean Cavanagh have all been nominated. Cavanagh, who is favourite to land the Player of the Year award, has been nominated for one of the half forward positions despite the fact that he featured at full forward all summer. Eyebrows have also been raised at Joe McMahon's omission, who would appear to have paid a costly price for his versatility.
In total, 13 counties are represented with beaten finalists Kerry coming a close second to Tyrone in terms of nominees with nine players nominated, including the three O Se brothers, Marc, Tomas and Darragh.
Wexford have been rewarded for their fairytale run to the All-Ireland semi-finals with four nominees, along with fellow semi-finalists and Munster champions Cork.
Leinster champions Dublin have just three players nominated compared to seven last year, while National League champions Derry have received a single nomination in the person of midfielder Fergal Doherty. Division 2 champions Westmeath fared better with goalkeeper Gary Connaughton and defenders John Keane and Michael Ennis receiving nominations.
Connacht champions Galway have also received three nominations, while Ulster champions Armagh have received two nominations in the shape of Francie Bellew and Ronan Clarke.
Cavan, Derry, Kildare and Monaghan complete the list with one nomination each.
Last year, 12 counties were represented in the nominations, with champions Kerry receiving 10 nominations, the same as this year's winners Tyrone, who had three nominations in 2007.
Seven of last year's All-Stars are nominated for a second consecutive year - Marc O'Sé, Tomas O'Sé, Graham Canty, Aidan O'Mahony, Dara O'Sé, Declan O'Sullivan and Colm Cooper.
Darragh O'Sé is looking to equal his uncle Páidí's All-Star haul by being nominated for his fifth award. Colm Cooper is also going for award number five.
The final selection will be announced on 15, October, two days prior to the All-Stars Banquet at the City West Hotel.
The All-Star hurling nominees will be announced on Thursday at 11pm.
