Seneschalstown 2-16 Trim 0-10

With the initial game having been called off last week, the Minors of Seneschalstown and Trim met on Tuesday evening in Dunganny with their life in the Minor Championship on the line.  

Having both lost their opening round encounters, another defeat would signal the end of their participation in the competition so the stakes couldn't have been higher.  

But in the end, it was Seneschalstown who proved to be that little bit stronger on the night as they turned in an impressive showing to eventually emerge with a twelve point victory, although the winning margin was probably somewhat harsh on the Trim side who were left to rue some missed opportunities at vital times.  

Ahead by five points at half time, Seneschalstown had to play into the fresh breeze in the second half but any thoughts that they might struggle were cast aside when inside the opening minute they had points on the board courtesy of Cathal Finnegan and Joseph Moore as they set out their marker that they weren't going to be reeled back in by the youngsters from Trim.  Then as the half wore on they picked off two goals to stretch their advantage and copper fasten their spot in Round 3 against Dunshaughlin on Monday evening.  

In the opening half, it was Trim who were first to score as they tapped over a fourth minute free but this only seemed to spark Seneschalstown into life as they then knocked over four points in a row through Ross Mullen, Cathal Finnegan with a brace and Dylan Keating.  Two further Trim frees with side of Cathal Finnegan's third saw them keep in touch before Sean Commons and Finnegan again stretched the Seneschalstown advantage.  In the twenty sixth minute, the side in red managed their opening point from play only for Joseph Moore to cancel it out and then Sean Commons to fist over the bar and leave Seneschalstown with that five point half time lead, 0-09 to 0-04.  The moment of the half though probably belonged to centre back Brian Maguire who pulled off a stunning block on the stroke of half time to prevent Trim from capitalising on a glorious goal scoring opportunity.

That lightning quick start to the second half from the Johnny Keating managed side saw their advantage stretch to seven points before flying wing forward Alan Mulvany saw his goal effort blaze over.  Trim sought to steady their ship and picked off two points only for Seneschalstown to hit back when they rattled the back of the net for the first time when Cathal Finnegan danced through the Trim rear-guard before beating their goalkeeper.  Wing forward Sean Carey then became the seventh member of his side to score when he bisected the uprights with a well taken effort.  

From this point on once they didn't concede a goal Seneschalstown were always likely to hold out for victory despite Trim exerting plenty of effort they weren't able to break through the Seneschalstown defence to raise a green flag.  They did manage four further points but with Finnegan keeping the scoreboard ticking over and Alan Mulvany finally managing to register the goal he had been threatening all evening Seneschalstown ended up winning out by twelve points.

Best for the side on the evening were Cathal Hickey, Simon Rooney and Brian Maguire.
