The late Tom Gibbons shoots as Mattie Kerrigan looks on during the Meath SFC Final against Seneschalstown at a packed Pairc Tailteann in 1977

It was with great sadness that the Club learned of the death of Tom Gibbons on Friday 11th August at his home in Youghal Co.Cork. Tom is remembered as a great clubman and a brilliant player.

His early football career was with his native Mayo, when in 1958 he played for Mayo Minors in All-Ireland Final against Dublin which they lost. He won a Mayo Senior Football Championship with West Mayo in 1963.

Coming to live in Summerhill in 1964, Tom joined the Summerhill GAA Club and it would be here that he would have his greatest football success. He played a vital role in the winning of a Junior Football Championship in 1966, Intermediate Championship in 1972 and the 4 in a row Senior Championships 1974-1977, the Leinster Club Championship in '77 along with Leagues, Feis Cup and numerous tournaments in this time. Tom's scoring prowess from play and especially as a free-taker in that era contributed largely to those successes.

Tom, wife Mary and family moved to Youghal in 1982 where he continued to play, winning a Junior Championship in 1984.

Former team mates and members of Summerhill GAA club formed  a guard of honour at his funeral on Monday 14th August 2017.

The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy on their great loss to his wife Mary, daughters Carol, Tracey, Aileen and Tara, sons Geoff, John and Thomas, sister Eileen McNelis former National Teacher in Dangan N.S, John former Principal Dangan N.S and player with Summerhill, Paddy former teacher in Dangan N.S and player with Summerhill, Myles,James and Geoffrey, and all extended family.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
